Guernsey Women’s Refuge
Guernsey Womens’ Refuge Limited is a registered charity, which since it opened in October 1998 has provided emergency accommodation and support services, including a 24‑hour telephone helpline and outreach support services to hundreds of women and their children who have been victims of domestic abuse.
Women can make direct contact with the Refuge as can their friends or relatives. However referrals are also accepted from various local authorities including the Police, Housing and Health & Social Services.
Emergency Accommodation
The Guernsey Women’s Refuge provides safe, emergency accommodation to women and their children leaving abusive relationships and to enable them to take control of their lives and make choices about their future.
The premises are well furnished and homely with residents encouraged to maintain an as normal as possible lifestyle within its safe environment. It has 5 bedrooms, a large well equipped kitchen with laundry facilities, comfortable lounge and a toy filled playroom. Although bathroom facilities are shared by residents, each bedroom is fitted with a washbasin and additional beds and cots are available for younger children. The building also houses an office and reception area in the event that residents need to meet privately with other agency workers. The Refuge is also able to accommodate women with physical disabilities.
24‑hour helpline
Often women remain with an abusive partner, whilst considering their options. To assist with this process, members of GWR staff are able to meet with women in the community at a time and location of their choosing in order to provide practical and emotional support. All such contacts are treated in confidence. If you would like to meet with a member of staff please telephone 01481 721 999.
- You can just call in to talk with one of our friendly members of staff.
- One of our staff can come to meet you in a place of your choice (not your home), maybe a cafe or a walk along the beach.
- You can use the phone. If you want we can call you back (our calls cannot be traced).
You do not have to come and stay at the Refuge if you feel you need our help and support.
