Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and a sport that teaches one how to defend himself/herself against a bigger, stronger more athletic opponent. It was developed by the Gracie Family in Brazil in 1925 by refining the martial art of Judo. Similar to Judo it involves takedowns but it is predominantly made up of ground fighting which uses leverage, timing and technique to establish control and apply submissions where required. Although BJJ is considered a combat sport, we do not teach or encourage students to aggress or exert force on any individual. The emphasis is always placed on technique and control.
At Gracie Barra Guernsey, we foster an environment of brotherhood / sisterhood / family, which brings us all together as a team, no matter your age, gender, athleticism or belt colour. All our club members (or that of any BJJ organisation) come from a variety of professions and backgrounds, yet we are united both on and off the mat in the bond we share.
