The Medical Specialist Group
The History
Prior to 1992, most Bailiwick patients requiring specialist examination or treatment had to fly to the UK. The Medical Specialist Group was formed with a view to providing much of that specialist care on-island – thereby not only saving patients the stress and inconvenience of travelling, but also saving the States of Guernsey much of the considerable cost thereof. More than 25 years later, the Medical Specialist Group has expanded and developed its services, becoming a vital and integral component of the local community. Our consultants and staff are Guernsey residents and they all immerse themselves in various aspects of island life outside of their professional commitments – whether that be socially, in sport or undertaking charitable activities.
Healthcare in Guernsey
The Bailiwick of Guernsey has a healthcare system for residents of Guernsey, Alderney and Herm funded by income tax and social security contributions. That scheme entitles all residentially-qualified citizens of those three islands to receive secondary healthcare free at the point of delivery. The Bailiwick’s government, the States of Guernsey, has retained the Medical Specialist Group to provide that secondary healthcare with stringent checks and balances in place within that contract to ensure a high standard of service. Bailiwick residents can also opt to self-pay or obtain private healthcare insurance cover, which can enable them to access various services and benefits that are not available under the States/Medical Specialist Group Contract.
