The Guernsey Mountaineering Club is the home of, and best resource for, climbing on the island of Guernsey. We mainly participate in rock climbing and rock climbing-related activities on the Island of Guernsey in the Channel Islands but its members also participate in other mountaineering-related activities whenever they get the chance. Climbing offers many physical and mental benefits including agility, improved joint and muscle flexibility, better balance, heightened focus, problem solving skills and stress relief and of course, increased strength.

The club has grown over the past few years and the two fairly new climbing walls on Guernsey have led to an increase in the popularity of the sport and awareness of the local club.

What the club does

To find out what nights the club are currently meeting, please see the programme page. The summer programme is scheduled out based on the tides and daylight hours, while in winter we meet at either the ‘Help a Guernsey Child’ wall at the Scout headquarters at Rue Mainguy or the Wooden Spoon wall at St Sampsons High School. Indoor evenings start at 7pm and finish around 9pm, outdoor climbing starts at 6pm and finishes when it gets dark or the tide comes in!

Membership fees

Currently set at £27 per year for adults, £21 per year for juniors (under 18) and £23 per year for students which covers affiliation to the BMC and club funds for equipment/training. An additional charge of £7.00 is added for sessions at Baubigny Schools as we have to pay them for use of their walls.

Please find below the GMC constitution and membership forms for download:

Restrictions

The minimum age is 16, and parental permission is needed for members under 18. The club will only take on novices in the winter as it’s easier and safer to teach them all the skills they need indoors before getting onto the crags. If you are a novice please contact one of the club committee members first before turning up. If you are a proficient belayer (double ropes, italian hitch etc.), can abseil, stop and ascend your own rope with prussiks then you are quite welcome to join at any time.
