📈 A 2024 survey from the charity @homestartguernsey found that 82% of parents had experienced feelings of isolation.

❓ Are you a parent feeling isolated or lonely? Or do you fancy having a cuppa and a chat with some new friends and fellow parents? Check out our Talking Cafés - they run every weekday, there is no need to book and they are free to attend.

📣 Tomorrow (Thursday) our Talking Café at Le Friquet Garden Centre is in Partnership with The @statesofguernsey Family Support Services, who will be able to listen to how you are feeling and offer specific support.

💙 'No man should walk alone. Not tonight. Not ever.' - @the_wildwolf

Yesterday was #InternationalMensDay and @the_wildwolf hosted a walk to raise awareness of male suicide in Guernsey, bringing together 76 men, and the ones who love them, to step forward, walk together, and stand as a symbol of hope and change.

We were pleased to attend Association of Guernsey Charities Charity Sector recently. So good to see so many community groups / charities represented and lots of The States of Guernsey colleagues all focused on collaboration in service of better outcomes 🙏

Here are the criteria for registering:

🔵 You are unable to afford regular taxis
🔵 Your family or friends are not available to help when you need it
🔵 You cannot use public transport for health or mobility reasons
🔵 You have no access to your own transport

👉 This free, volunteer-led service enables people across our Bailiwick to attend medical appointments, social activities and essential services – reducing loneliness, improving inclusion and helping people remain independent.

✨ Last week, the Health Connections team met with Cathy from Guernsey Hard of Hearing.

🫶 Cathy visited us at our office inside the Le Vauquiedor entrance at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital and gave us an incredibly insightful overview of the support and services she offers.

❓ She can provide home visits or meet you at a location that suits you, helping people to find the right support for their hearing needs or to choose products that can make daily life easier.

👂 Cathy also took the time to explain how the inner ear works, describing it as a tiny spiral, a bit like a snail shell. If you were to unroll it, you’d see how sound travels along the length of it: the beginning responds to high-pitched sounds, while the deeper end picks up lower tones. Over time, the section that processes higher pitches is usually the first to wear down, which is why many people lose high-frequency hearing before lower tones. It was fascinating to learn how this affects the way we experience sound as we get older.

We discussed the wider impact of hearing loss, including research showing a link between untreated hearing difficulties and an increased risk of early-onset Alzheimer’s and dementia. It was highlighted how having your hearing checked regularly and accessing the right support can play an important role in helping to delay or reduce the onset of these conditions.

We also talked about the wide range of practical supports available through Guernsey Hard of Hearing, from information and guidance to equipment and hearing aid advice. Cathy’s knowledge and passion for helping people live confidently with hearing loss was inspiring.

It’s time to talk about mental health. This #WorldMentalHealthDay, we stand united for wellbeing, connection, and community.

📊 Did you know?

- In the UK, 1 in 4 adults experiences a mental health problem each year - @mindcharity
- Rates of common mental health conditions among 16-24 year olds have increased from 18.9% in 2014 to 25.8% in 2024 - @rethinkmentalillness
- Almost 10% of UK adults took time off work for mental health reasons in the past year, and nearly half of those absences lasted a month or more - @mhfaengland

Here are some things you can do today to help those around you that may need support:

🤝 Reach out - send a message, make a call, or ask 'are you okay?'.
🧠 Share a mental-health resource or helpline.
📖 Educate yourself and others - knowing the signs can save lives.

☕ October's Talking Cafés are in full swing!

💙 There will be a Talking Café running every weekday throughout October.

They are free to attend, there is no need to book and they are open to all ages - all you need to do is come along and enjoy. They are a fantastic way to meet new people, enjoy a cuppa and a chat and make some new friends. Pop these times in your diary:
